Michael
Tarney is one of the owners
of three Milwaukee hot-spot dining venues: North Shore
Bistro, Harry's Bar and Grill, and The Knick. After
his own diagnosis with psoriatic arthritis in his late
30's, he made it his mission to increase awareness about
the disease and the 100 plus forms of arthritis that
affect both children and adults. To do this, he spearheaded
his own event in conjunction with the Arthritis Foundation,
Wisconsin Chapter, with the goal to raise funds for
the programs and services the Foundation offers to people
living with arthritis.
"By walking and running together,
we make a positive statement about life - you have to
keep moving!"
His vision is indeed to keep moving
and let others see that although arthritis is not a
glamorous disease it exists and reduces quality of life
- and, left untreated, can be crippling. By raising
awareness and money, it is possible to help others see
that they can keep moving forward as well. He believes
that he has a strong obligation to give something back
to the community that has given him so much.
"I want people to realize
how devastating this disease can be
but I also
want them to know that there is hope and, by working
together, we increase our chances of finding the cures
that will change lives for so many people."
Living with this disease for several
years, Michael has the support of friends and family
who have helped to support his efforts and his attitude.
